BERGAMO
Bergamo è il quarto comune della regione per popolazione, 119 248 abitanti,
capoluogo dell'omonima provincia in Lombardia.
La città di Bergamo è divisa in due parti distinte, la Città Alta, con un centro storico cinto da mura e la Città Bassa.
Bergamo Alta è una città medioevale, circondata da bastioni eretti nel XVI
secolo, durante la dominazione veneziana al fine di renderla una
fortezza inespugnabile. Bergamo è tuttora una delle poche città italiane, assieme a Ferrara, Lucca, Verona, Padova,Treviso e Grosseto, il cui centro storico è rimasto completamente circondato dalle mura che, a loro volta, hanno mantenuto pressoché intatto il loro aspetto originario nel corso dei secoli.
Bergamo è anche soprannominata "Città dei Mille" per via del cospicuo numero di volontari bergamaschi che prese parte alla spedizione dei Mille guidata da Giuseppe Garibaldi contro l'esercito borbonico nel Regno delle Due Sicilie durante ilRisorgimento (dal 5 maggio al 26 ottobre 1860).
Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy, situated about 40 km north-east of Milan and 30 km from the lakes Como and Iseo. The foothills of the Bergamo Alps begin immediately north of the town.
Bergamo occupies the site of the ancient town of Bergomum, a settlement of the Celtic tribe of Cenomani. In 49 BC, it became a Roman municipality, containing around 10,000 inhabitants at its peak. An important hub on the military road between Friuli and Raetia, it was destroyed by Attila in the 5th century. In 1428, it fell under the control of the Venetian Republic, remaining part of it until 1797.
The town has two centres: "Città alta" (upper city), a hilltop medieval town, surrounded by defensive walls, and the "Città bassa" (lower city). The upper city, surrounded by magnificent Venitian walls built in the 16th century, forms the historic centre of Bergamo.
The two parts of the town are connected by roads, and foot-paths and a cable-car. However. parking spaces are very limited in the upper city.
Bergamo is well connected to several cities in Europe and the Mediterranean through Il Caravaggio International Airport, the third-busiest airport in Italy with 10.5 million passengers in 2015, and the motorway A4 stretching between Milan, Verona, and Venice.
